collision course as technology blurs lines and challenges preconceptions. But while the distinctions may seem to

be slowly evaporating, the spaces in between are still there, however small they may be getting. And it’s these spaces,

these analog-digital hinterlands, that Dutch artist Olga Mink explores in her work, which encompasses

Terminal @Austin Peay State University

Prof. Barry Jones invited me to be part of the exhibition taking place at their campus in spring 2012.

Starting in January of 2012, Terminal will have a “physical” space to exhibit the work of new media artists on the campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. There will be programming in the “virtual” space to coincide with the exhibitions.

Terminal is a space sponsored by the Department of Art and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts at Austin Peay State University to showcase and examine internet and new media art. The site is directed and maintained by Barry Jones, Associate Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University

Muziek inspireert vormgevers. Beeld inspireert muzikanten. In het project SEE-A-SOUND zie je hoe muziek er volgens een vormgever uit ziet en hoor je hoe beeld volgens een muzikant klinkt. Het één inspireert het ander. De eindresultaten van het project zijn te zien in een expositie, die loopt van 27 januari (tevens opening) tot en met 20 april 2012 bij het bkkc in Tilburg.

Beelden zijn een ijzersterk middel voor reflectie en communicatie. Door beelden toe te voegen worden werkvormen krachtiger. Werken met visuals werkt verfrissend, inspirerend, geeft verrassingseffecten brengt nieuw elan in een proces. Visuals brengen beeld en geluid samen en dat is precies waar SEE-A-SOUND voor staat.

Olga Mink vertelt over live cinema en het ontstaan van live visual performance. Motorbongo, winnaar van de bkkc-compositiewedstrijd voor de zwijgende film, laat hun score horen bij de western Straight Shooting. Een exclusieve preview dus!

Deze avond is niet compleet zonder speciale gasten als Kijkbuiskinderen, een ambitieus vj-collectief dat visuals en decoraties op bijzondere wijze overbrengt op publiek. En als klap op vuurpijl Job, Joris & Marieke, o.a. bekend van de clip van Gers Pardoel- “Ik neem je mee” en “Happy Camper”.

Kortom het belooft een krachtige en inspirerende avond te worden!

I became part of a new group called EXQUISITE WHAT!

EXQUISITE WHAT! is a group of artists assembling a series of evolving music/visual pieces via web. A semi-open source project in progress that follows the surrealist’s method of “Exquisite Corpse”. Artist involved are musicians, film-makers, photographers, and visual artists.

Since its creation in December 2010 EXQUISITE WHAT! evolved via web; the artists involved belong to different backgrounds and gaze different approaches. Their encounters have been nourished by mutual support, curiosity and companionship, in the spirit of experimentation and free exchange. For the collective mainly only met via web they mean to start a series of public shows. Their performances will follow the same method that they use to build their reality investigating and reassembling sonic fragments and visual concepts in a symbiotic relationship, with live performances and installations, conferences and exhibitions, set in various contexts, spaces and locations

Educational website on Dutch Art &Technology

We developed a new educational website for Kunstbalie/STRP School for secondary (highschool) education.

The website explains historic developments on art and technology in the Netherlands, after World War II. It features Dutch pioneers, such as Theo Jansen, Gerrit van Bakel, La Poeme Electronique and interdisciplinairy artists such as Marnix de Nijs and Studio Rosegaarde. Next to completing creative assignments, watching video’s and interviews, pupils are able to test their new knowledge instantly by answering the interactive Fact or Fiction Quizzer. Coding by Cage.nl.

Kunstenaars aan het werk met kranten

EINDHOVEN – Acht kunstenaars en vormgevers zijn op 1 oktober op ons verzoek aan de slag gegaan met ieder 1 kuub kranten. Dat leverde fantastische kunstwerken op. Het filmpje is van Olga Mink, mediakunstenaar. Zij was de enige die niet iets concreets in elkaar zette, maar een stop motion filmpje maakte.

De kunstwerken zijn te zien bij Sectie C van De Smalle Haven, Daalakkersweg 2-8 in Eindhoven, tijdens de DDW, open van 16-23 uur.

BEELDENSTORM, NFF2011

Het Nederlands Film Festival maakt zich met het programma Beeldenstorm op voor de toekomst en wil een wegwijzer zijn in een sterk veranderend medialandschap waarin film, de Nederlandse film, van substantiële betekenis is. Programmaonderdeel re:visie stelt de conventies, esthetiek en verschijningsvorm van het filmmedium aan de orde. Hedendaagse kunstenaars met verschillende achtergronden en werkterreinen onderzoeken de mogelijkheden en beperkingen ervan en maken de balans op.

Beeldenstorm expositie
Op onverwachte plekken tonen kunstenaars hun werk door de collectie van het Centraal Museum. Bart Hess, die naam maakte met zijn lichaamsvervormende ontwerpen onderzoekt de wisselwerking tussen het lichaam en ongewone materialen. Pose van Kay Schuttel is een drieluik over de invloed van de beeldcultuur op het bewustzijn van jonge meisjes. Rosa Menkman wil de oneindige digitale stroom van beelden op een andere manier bekijken in Nova Roja Movies. Sander Veenhof speelt in op de reflex van de hedendaagse mens. Hij geeft in dit werk een eigen interpretatie aan het gebruiken van nieuwe technologieën om zo het publiek uit te dagen. Levi van Veluw neemt zijn eigen portret als uitgangspunt en roept door vertrouwde associaties in een nieuwe context te plaatsen een verwarrend effect op. Bij Lucas Maassen is het motto; Als een stoel kan praten kan hij ook zingen. Iris van Herpen staat voor een wisselwerking tussen vakmanschap en innovatie. Naast klassiek handwerk hanteert ze de nieuwe technologie van een 3D-printer. Van 21 t/m 30 sept. Kaarten verkrijgbaar bij het Centraal museum. www.centraalmuseum.nl

Re:visie avond in Centraal Museum
Een bijzondere avond met live performances en presentaties. Bart Hess toont een Slijm performance, waarvan Lady Gaga in haar laatste clip een slijmjurk droeg. Anouk Whipprecht toont met DareDroid 2.0 een jurk die cocktails mixt. Lucas Maassen verrast het publiek met een zingende stoel; “Yes, ladies and gents, it’s time to stop talking about chairs and let them talk back at us”. De performances worden afgewisseld met intermezzo’s onder leiding van curatoren Ninke Bloemberg en Olga Mink.

Storylines
Sander Veenhof ontwikkelde een uniek augmented reality project. Ter gelegenheid van het NFF is het centrum van Utrecht tijdelijk het toneel van een “3D surround filmset”. Niets gezien? Klopt. De ‘film’ speelt zich af in augmented reality. Of eigenlijk, de film heeft zich daar afgespeeld. Met de juist app op de smartphone openbaart zich een wereld aan scènes die als verhaallijnen kunnen worden bewandeld. Het centrale punt van het project is het LED scherm op het Neude. Te zien van 21 t/m 30 sept.

A Vernacular of File Formats
Dinercafé ʼt Hoogt toont in het kader van re:visie werk van kunstenares Rosa Menkman dat bestaat uit een video-installatie en prints. In het werk van Rosa Menkman speelt het falen en toeval binnen digitale media een belangrijke rol. Compressie, artefacten, beeldstoringen… Menkman maakt dankbaar gebruik van alles wat we liever negeren binnen de digitale technologie. Het digitale, het ongrijpbare, het vluchtige, en daarmee ook het onvoorspelbare. Het digitale beeld is als een onstuitbare acrobaat die tot alles in staat lijkt te zijn. Maar waar kijken we eigenlijk echt naar, en waarom?
Opening in ‘t Hoogt, op vrijdag 23 september van 16:00 tot 17:00 uur.

Master Film
Tijdens deze avond presenteert De Master Film van de NFTA hun ideeen over Open Onderzoek en Ontwikkeling. Ook single screen cinema kan baat hebben bij andere vormen van (open) ontwikkeling die bijvoorbeeld in de beeldende kunst en de architectuur al bestaan. Het onderzoek van de maker(s) staat hierin centraal. Vrijdag 23 september, vrije toegang. 20.30 uur, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, Blauwe zaal.

Bum Stories
Neem op weg van en naar de verschillende festivallocaties ook nog even de tijd om langs het Neude te gaan. Daar is het werk van Ingmar Bergman te zien. In Bum Stories onderzoekt hij de grens tussen privé en openbaar. Hij vraagt zich af hoe het met onze privacy gesteld is als je hele netwerk kan meekijken? Te zien op het festival paviljoen aan het Neude van 21 t/m 30 sept.

Singing Chair
De zingende stoel van Lucas Maassen zal te pas en te onpas verschijnen, zowel in de publieke ruimte als op festivallocaties. De stoel heeft de blues of doet een volksdeuntje als een geroutineerd artiest en reageert op het publiek en de omgeving. Donderdag 22 sept. op diverse lokaties. Op woe 28 september het Centraal Museum.

Q & A with: Olga Mink (interview by Shantell Martin)

Where are you based out off?
Netherlands, Eindhoven

Tell us about your background and experiences in the Audio Visual scene?
I switched from Fine arts to Animation Design during my art studies. I then started experimenting with abstract video and visual performance. During my Masters at Sandberg Institute I started making video installations. Gradually my work shifted in multiscreen presentations. Next to my art practice, I work as a freelance curator. Currently I’m working for re:visie, the annual Dutch Film festival in Utrecht. I also work as an Education Consultant in media art. This allows me to shift my focus into a new perspective, which is a challenge!

What are some of your Influences and Inspirations?
Many artists inspire me. I like it when people reveal an alternative thought. Ideas that show something different and challenge me to look at the world in a way I never did before. This could be in art, music, architecture, technology, poetry, film, visual culture. I am influenced by fluxus artists but also by many contemporary artists.

Is there a Major project/s and Successes that you have worked on in the past?
A successful project is a work that means something special in a personal way. For example Atlantida, a collaboration with Scanner. It was a special commission, created at the location of the Canarian islands. Sjansmachine, a collaboration with Rolf van Gelder and Carmin Karasic, is an interactive installation reflecting current phenomena in social media. It connects people in the real world instead of the virtual. The interactive part allows people to have a lot of fun which makes this a great project to present.

What are some of your favorite projects/shows to date?
I am developing a concept commissioned by the City council of Eindhoven. This installation generates realtime music and image based on numbers. People experience a unique audiovisual repertoire based on their social security number displayed on a huge video wall.

Future predictions on where you see you and your work going?
Next weeks’ show is a live drawing project alongside Belgian musicians, called Totem. Sjansmachine has been invited to the Boston Cyberarts Festival, next year. Last but not least, two of my works have been shortlisted for the Celeste Network Art Prize 2010. Mostly my work is presented outside of the Netherlands.

Why should we go see your work?
I hope to bring something different and new into the world by interacting with the world around me. Some works are temporary whilst others have a more permanent nature and tune into a specific space. Some of my works require a dedicated environment to be experienced, for example a public space. It allows me to be more playful in my work usually.

Flirtmachine (in Dutch: Sjansmachine) is selected for Currents 2011 (June 10 – June 19th) the annual International New Media Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.

Flirtmachine (Dutch: sjansmachine) is an interactive installation that works with real-time images and face detection software. Sjansmachine reflects the world we live in and the ever-increasing technologies that incorporate daily life. The aim of this installation is to bring people closer together in a playful and fun way. Like many social networking tools on the Internet these days, Sjansmachine enables you to connect with other people. It plays with the idea that the virtual world is replacing our social life and therefore wants people to connect in the real world again. Participants intuitively use emerging technologies, such as QR tags and face detection, to ‘find new friends’.

The custom software automatically takes a picture when a face is detected in the photobooth. Participants enter their personal preferences Top 3 with the QR cubes. After personal data is entered, Sjansmachine sends your picture to the projections.
A match can be calculated if Sjansmachine detects similar data entered by someone else. During “match mode” Sjansmachine displays its matched couple in front of the audience. Matched couples win free drinks! Previous versions were presented at Plazaplus Festival, The Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht and Currents festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This project is a collaboration between Olga Mink, Carmin Karasic and Rolf van Gelder.

Sjansmachine is appealing to both eyes and heart. Not only fun is guaranteed, but also the stimulation of meetings, talks and even heated discussions amongst visitors. What is the use of meeting like this? What is the benefit of social media networks? How could digital technologies ever know what’s best for us? Questions like these and many others arose immediately during and after playing with it.
